Dear Federal Chairman of the CDU, Mr. Merz,
\nDear Chairman of the CSU, Dr. S\u00f6der,
\nDear Chairman of the EPP Group, Mr. Weber,<\/p>\n

We are deeply concerned by reports of close substantive coordination between the EPP Group and members of far-right groups in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n

These developments undermine the clear distinction emphasized by the CDU and CSU vis-\u00e0-vis the extreme right in parliamentary practice. The red line you yourselves have set\u2014of not entering into agreements with far-right forces\u2014has clearly been crossed here. We urgently remind you of your own commitments: Uphold democratic principles\u2014for the sake of Europe and in view of domestic political challenges.<\/p>\n

A Europe of freedom, human dignity, and the rule of law cannot be achieved with the extreme right. With its program of a nationalist \u201cEurope of nation-states,\u201d the extreme right is setting a fuse to the European project\u2014one that Christian democratic forces have strongly advocated for since 1945 and helped to build.<\/p>\n

We expressly welcome your public criticism of the reported developments. What matters now is to draw the right political consequences.<\/p>\n

On March 26, you have the opportunity to send a clear signal: The EPP can vote in plenary against the decision of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on the Return Directive and return to the negotiating table with the democratic groups.<\/p>\n

Democracy means exchange, negotiation, and compromise. However, one thing must remain non-negotiable: human rights are indivisible, and the rule of law applies to all. European asylum and migration policy must not undermine these principles.<\/p>\n

It is precisely here\u2014regarding the respect for human rights\u2014that the current draft of the Return Directive shows significant weaknesses. In particular, the planned deportation centers outside the EU, even for families with children, as well as the expansion of detention pending deportation, pose considerable risks to the protection of fundamental rights under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.<\/p>\n

We therefore call on you to:
\n\u2013 ensure a clear and binding distinction from the extreme right also at the European level,
\n\u2013 not to pursue the current draft of the Return Directive in its present form, and
\n\u2013 advocate for an asylum and migration policy that remains firmly committed to the rule of law and human rights standards.<\/p>\n
